How to manage wires and cables when taking iMac apart

I want to try and fix my overheating Mac. I’ve watched lots of tutorials and think I may need to go as far as replacing the thermal paste on my CPU and graphics card. One thing that doesn’t get mentioned is how to keep track of the wires/cables and how to make sure you remember which ones goes where. I’ve seen someone using post-it strips, does anyone else have any tips for methods they use when doing this? Cheers.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

First of all photograph all wire plugs and sockets. You could then with a fine tipped marker pen number each cable plug and socket.

Thanks for your reply Thomas, much appreciated. Do you mean mark up a print out of the photos of the wires etc? I wonder though how I will still know which wire is which when putting them back if I have only marked up a photo? It may still be hard to recognise them if they are all similar. Cheers.
