iPod classic 3rd gen only recognized over USB, not over FireWire

I have an iPod classic 3rd gen that I have in disk mode that I need to restore to get working again, but iTunes and disk utility only recognize the ipod when i plug it in with USB, and It says connect to firewire to restore, which i cant do as stated above. Also, when I format it over usb in disk utility and then click update, it says plug into wall charger to complete update, but when i plug it in, nothing happens. Help!

If this helps: I’m using an adapter from fw400-800 on a 2009 MacBook Pro using OS X Mavericks, and the iPod automatically goes into disk mode when I connect it with usb or firewire

Edit: I got it working!!! It’s this simple:

Install windows XP onto old pc

Get my MacBook

Format usb drive to fat

Put iPod updater software on it

Plug into windows xp pc

Move installer onto desktop

Open installer

Plug iPod in with USB??? Even though it said FireWire!??

Restore iPod

Plug iPod into power brick

Put it out of disk mode

It will restore and update

This took so long to get working but thank you for your replies!
