Does not recognize hard drive

I have not used in two years but thought would salvage it.

When I start the mac it gives a flickering folder with a question mark. After some web search I booted the system with the install CD. After startup when I try to install it says “Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer” . Is replacing the hard drive the only solution for this ?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Please tell us what system your machine is booting into from the DVD. Does it have the original hard drive?

not sure if this answers your question. I do command+R with the DVD.

1) It says Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer

2) Disk utility is showing only the DVD drive

3) Startup disk shows two options: the install DVD and "Network Startup" with a question mark on a drive.

First boot up from the DVD by pressing the start button and immediately inserting the DVD. Hold down the “C” key to boot from the DVD. The system install page should show up. Go to the second page and the pull down menu will appear. Now go to Disk Utilities.

By holding down the command R you are booting from the repair partition on the hard drive.

Thanks for the pointers. But I got the same options as before and when I retried it just told me to restart the machine.
