long story short, thought my original SSD kicked the bucket, installed a new one. Disk utilities not recognizing drive when in internet recovery. Could it be a bad SSD controller on the board? does anyone know of any other ways to test it?

I don’t recommend using M.2 SSD’s with these cheap adapters. Sadly, I don’t find them reliable. I have a very full drawer of failed units.
I think you’ll find getting the proper custom Apple SSD or one of the direct plug in SSD’s from OWC or Transcend will be better.
