Loading bar on start-up screen then shuts off a forth through loading

My Apple computer just started showing a loading bar on the start-up screen that was never there before. It loads a forth of the way through, tries to load again and just shuts off. We held the "D" bottom and ran a system test that just makes the computer freezes in the last few seconds of the test. Also resetting the RAM does nothing.

Additionally, the computer gets really hot when we tried to fix it.

Pretty sure it is some kind of hardware problem, but not sure what.

Your system is trying to repair a problem. Start up from your system installation disk, go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility and select your drive in the left hand column and repair the drive till it runs clear then repair your permissions. Here's what Apple has to say on it: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3148
