What should I do with balloon Lithium batteries?

I opened up my wife MBA only to find three of her lithium cells had ballooned to a perfect pillow shape. What would be the best and safest way to dispose of them?

Once you remove it, check with your local/state/federal government’s regulations on how to dispose of lithium batteries. It’ll probably involve a trip to a special recycler/drop off station. In the United States, it’s illegal to dispose of them in household trash.

In the mean time store it outside and away from anything flammable!

A large can of wet sand that's at least three times the size of your battery and has a metal screen mesh over it to control flames and any thrown material if it explodes.

The vapors are not something you want to breath as well.

The bulge happened overnight. I figured someone stepped on it and bent it. There were a number of times I torqued the laptop trying to bend it back into shape. It goes to show how I got pretty lucky.
