The port can wear out over time. Depends on quality of the HDMI cable for example if one was very hard to plug in it can damage the port quickly.

Also take note that unplugging and plugging it while it is switched on a lot in short succession will kill the HDMI chip over time in my cases it took a few minutes.

I have confirmed this when testing.

If you want to be safe which is recommended only unplug the HDMI cable after the power cable is disconnected and/or when the PS4 is turned off fully.

Unplugging/plugging devices frequently (several times a day, for instance) shouldn’t damage the device anytime soon. Physical damage to electronic devices are usually due to accidents or misuse.

I plan on installing a 6 inch extension on my hdmi device, and leave it in place, that way if you damage the cord, you just replace it. The hdmi input/output will remain in good shape.

Yes and it is important especially with boys who love video games to get the hdmi box with multiple ports..my son age 9 would switch from his video game to live tv so much and he would unplug the cord from the tv hdmi port alot and eventually it could fray the hdmi port …the wires were visible in my case…if they yank the cord or be careless while putting it back in or taking it out the port ,it will get damaged…so if the tv is for your use…normal use then a hdmi box is not needed…but if you are connecting to multiple sources ..then yes get you a box…
