Pressing L2 trigger also register pressing up

Hello, so my issue is that if I fully press the L2 trigger on my ps4 controller , It also act like I'm pressing up as well. It doesn't seem to do that though if I just lightly press. I tried resyncing it and even open up the controller to remove any dust, but the issue is still there trying both options. Anyone know what could be the issue?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

When i press l2 i look up

by

Did anyone find a solution? I also have this problem where I press L2 on fortnite and my character/camera looks upwards.

by

Yeah me too it's really annoying ima try to reset the controller.

by

I read on another thread that either resetting the controller or dabbing a little bit of oil at the base of the stick will do the trick i had the same issue and with the reset, i’m all good

by

you can fix this with a little bit of electric tape.. as i had this issue with the dualshock 3.. just locate the ribbon that connects every button and trigger and insert a little piece of electric tape to make a better contact https://www.ebay.es/itm/Sony-PS4-control...

If this is the case. I looked up ways to solve it and by either 1: getting a pen, pencil or anything thin and press the button on the back of your controller (by the L2 screw) and hold it for 10-15 seconds. It will turn off. Turn it back on and see if it was fixed. If that didnt solve the problem then the second option is to blow into the L2 and L1 opening. I held the R2 and R1 openings so the air could go through the controller. The second solution solved my problem. If it still doesnt work look it up on youtube is my best answer. REMINDER dont blow the controller for too long! If done the controller will release a goey white substance out the head phone jack.

You mean that pressing the l2 makes your gaming figure look up as the joystick would do? If so,that is a very weird issue indeed. I’d force has something to do with it,you could take it apart and put it back together to see if something had pressure on it. For looking up and down, the joysticks are usually what are used. The arrow pads are making contact with a green plastic film circuit board, that’s also used with the l2 button. But the joysticks are usually used in most games like fortnite,to move and look up or down.

Has it been dropped at all? It’s always possible the processing chip has a loose connection..

Also, each joystick has 2 Little green squares Next to it. If you pop the green square apart, you find white looking wheels inside. These are what control the electricity flow so that the controller knows which direction you’re pushing the joy stick. If one is loose, maybe it is making contact at random.

I still don’t see how pushing the l2 would cause this only when pressed harder. But I guess the processing chip could be bad and pressing the l2 is not being processed by the chip correctly and it gets mixed up thinking you’re moving the joystick.

No, it like in fighting games were if you press up it causes you to jump. I did clean the contact where the plastic film is but that didn't do anything. Also, check and clean the trigger and didn't see any in between the triggers. It seem I have to take it apart completely and see about the processing chip. It has drop before a few times.

I also have this problem but it’s with R2 and my X button, it’ll do this when I’m playing Minecraft and usually when it does a green light starts flashing on the right side of the back of my PS4 controller, usually this is when I’m using Bluetooth so I just disconnect it and do it again and it fixes it for a little, but it’s really annoying and does it extremely often, I mean like “every 5 minutes” often

I got a controller that was doing that issue and I found a permanent fix to this problem. If resetting the controller does not work, the problem is related to the joystick (joystick drift). Sometimes it will just need a clean to the potentiometer and other times, you will need to change it but they are very cheap and easy to change (no soldering require). I found this video that should help you to fix your issue : https://youtu.be/RcIza5Zz8qY

Perhaps the physical button is sticking some in the controller body, or something sticky may be gumming it up. The micro processor itself could also be failing. if that button doesn’t move as freely as the other buttons, just perhaps it may take a little bit of modifying to the controller body by slightly widening the opening with a precision hobby knife, or a bit of lithium grease on the pivot points. If you have another controller like it compare the buttons’ range and ease of movement with the one in question. One thing might be if it’s wireless, I presume so, then just maybe pressing the reset button if there’s a little pinhole in the back with a pin or small screwdriver may force a hard reset if it’s just a software error. Or disconnecting the battery within and pressing a couple of buttons for several seconds will fully discharge the processor and then will update with correct data.

This might help:

The contacts for the buttons of the controller are mapped onto a flexible circuit sheet.

That circuit sheet links to the motherboard via simple physical contact - when the motherboard is screwed in, a row of raised contacts press down on exposed contacts on that flexible sheet.

I opened my controller and it turned out there was some gunk or oxide on those contacts. Rub them away with an eraser, and the problem was fixed.

In my case, it was ghost presses on L2, but for your case, I'm imagining a buildup of conductive gunk might've linked the terminal contacts of the up button and the L2 button together, resulting in that behavior. I'd advise getting a full teardown guide on ifixit.com, plucking that flexible sheet off entirely, and checking the entire length of the circuit for any dirt or oxide linking the lines. Hope it helps!

But is the sheet connected to analog sticks? My problem is that if I press L2, it will also register upward movement with left analog stick. Like if Im playing cod and try to aim with L2 my character will also move forward without me touching the analog stick. Gamepad tester also registers this movement.

I've tried to disassemble and clean every contact but nothing has worked so far.

I can't believe that no one even mentioned the capacitive film. It's either the contact between the film and the board is dirty or it needs a little bit of tape for better contact or the capacitive film is broken or needs replacing.

Edit: Upon further looking I see someone mentioned "plastic film" so glad I was wrong and because that's the correct answer.

Proof. When I assembled my controller after changing the analog cap whenever I press UP in the game instead it instead press R2 which is for the aim. So instead of moving forward my character is aiming the weapon instead.

Turns out the contact of the capacitive film I accidentally bent it a little bit. I ironed it out and the issue went away.

I recommend ordering a new film make sure to order the correct model.

So, My controller doesn't want to register everytime I play a game. I have to turn the controller off and then turn it back on for it to work. But it automatically holds the L2 button so I can't use it for some reason
