damaged ribbon cable to quicklaunch bar

So while disassembling my laptop to fix the CPU fan, I somehow damaged the ribbon cable that connects the quick launch bar at the top of the keyboard. I'd like to know if I can replace that ribbon cable alone or if I need to replace the whole MB just to replace that cable.

HI: Once again I will tell you this cable is available. In your post you have the URL of the manual and on page 5-51 it shows the ribbon cable and the zif socket. what happens is trying to remove the ribbon cable from here usually has the aluminum type conductors rip off the back of the flat surface. IT only takes a minor amount of ribbon to attach inside the zif socket to work. press down the conductors and cut the ribbon sparingly so you have enough of the rigid plastic back to shove in the socket. gently wiggle it back in. There are two types of these zif sockets and one has a black t on either side you push away to unwedge the ribbon but this one for the dvd player and other control on the board under the screen has one that sort of wedges down. It is a terrible thing but you can make sure the conductors are not touching as you trim back a bit and wiggle it under. I have done it several times. And I also have a spare exact ribbon cable on hand purchased when I did not know I could trim off on the bad end. I will see if I can send a picture with my old fingers at the cable. The ribbon cable runs under the touch pad under the keyboard and up to the lighted board.

Here is one on ebay at this url by the way

that picture shows the connection to the MB that I'm specifically talking about. I did not believe that the ribbon cables could be removed from those connections. Thank you for showing me. Now I just hope that I can remove the damaged one off of my MB without causing more damage.

HI:

The ribbon cable is a part alone and can be replaced. I have found them on ebay about $4.00. I have repaired them by using scissors and cutting across the aluminum foil where it goes in the ZFC connector and it is doing great. Has to be enough of the rigid part left to push in the socket. What ever you do do not try soldering anything on the MB or you will have to throw it away. They are multi layered PCB and fragile. I bet you had trouble getting the ribbon out from the socket at the front of the unit. Happens almost every time I try. IT will just push back in after it is cut square under the lip of the socket as it is sort of spring loaded and is meant to wiggle out with patience.

Update

HI:

Once again you refer to removing this cable from the motherboard. It is not attached to the motherboard but from the connection I have in my last post and under the keyboard then up to the led button panel. So I do not know what you are referring to by removing it from the MB.

If you need any more help about this you have to clarify your statement about removing it from the MB.

Good luck

I have checked the service manual, and there is no indication that a separate ribbon cable can be purchased. The end that is damaged is the end that connects the MB to the quick launch panel. The end on the MB is fine. I've done a close examination of the damaged end and the thin wire contacts have come up off the ribbon and are crossed over one another.

Looking at the ribbon attached to the MB, I don't see how it could be replaced as it looks fastened permanently to the MB.
