Please give us your exact machine, what Operating system you have on the internal drive and some history on what the computer was doing prior to it failing. This can happen when the unit has a hard time recognizing the system, the system is to high for this model. It can happen when the drive has not been picked as the start up device.

Try resetting the PRAM:

Here's how to reset your PRAM:

  1. Shut down your machine. Yes, all the way down, not sleep or logging out.
  2. Press the power button and then press command-option-p-r. ...
  3. Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you here the startup chime.
  4. Let go of the keys and let your Mac reboot normally.

Macbook 5,1 (2GHz) Running el capitan. i had a problem where the screen was sometimes flashing when i was using it and I decided to try a to make a new partition on the drive (I'm going to use dosdudes sierra patcher to install sierra on my mac) so i installed el capitan temporarily on the second partition and when i booted into it worked fine and i tried the recovery mode and it worked fine i did a drive fix with the tool and now its working fine ( i will update if the problem comes back )
