The iPhone 3G Display Assembly contains the earpiece. I recommend replacing this part to solve the issue.

how do I replace the ear speaker without taking the digitizer off the mid frame? I repair iPhones and I have 4 people that have brought me their 3g phones this week with the ear speaker not working. I have cleaned it and used the headphone jack several times with no luck. I replaced it with a setup from another working phone and it works find on the broken phone so I am convinced it is the speaker but I have never taken out the speaker before and dont really want to learn on a customers phone!! Thanks

ouch! I was just looking for instructions to replace the actual speaker without replacing the display assembly or mid frame. I wanted to do it while the display assembly was still attached.
