Hard drive caddy really required? Best OS for stock?

I have no clue if the caddy is important. I have a 240GB Kingston SSD installed, and it seems to sit well with the cardboard support I put on it. Do I need the caddy to keep it better in place? (Trying to be as cheap as possible)

Also what’s the best OS you guys would suggest? It’s an Intel i5 (520M or 540M, I have no clue which) with 4GB RAM. I suppose I could upgrade, but like I said before, cheap as possible.

Answer this question I have this problem too

I always use the caddy with double sided taped. Install Windows 10. Windows 7 is losing support in 2020.
