Keyboard not functioning properly.

So I have an old MBP. Aside from a few dings the thing seems to be fine. But there is a issue with the keyboard where you have to press the keys in a certain way for them to work. Not like a short because the keys will work if you hit them in the right way. If you shine a light under the keys look dusty like badly dusty. How should I clean out the keys any tips? Do I have to remove each key or can I teardown the machine and separate the keyboard?

Canned air may help but since dirt seems to be quite a bit and you have already that in mind I would recommend removing logic board and backlight sheet and blow inside out to get the best results. Removing keys one by one might be an alternative solution but less efficient and time consuming.

You could try to spray compressed air under the keys but if the dirt is the result of liquid spill you’ll have to remove the keys and clean under with Qtips and isopropyl alcool. If it doesn’t work you can also replace the keyboard with a brand new one but it’s a good job and many screws to remove and reinstall. Be aware that the 15” Early 2011 has a problematic logic board (820-2915). The graphic chip fails after a few years and there’s no way to repair it. Think of it before investing too much in this machine.
