How to clean Internals from Water Damage

Hi, I made a stupid error and dropped some of my pop drink on my dell laptop keyboard. How do you exactly disassemble the laptop and watch should I aim to take apart to clean based on what would be contaminated?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi,

First do not turn on the laptop or attempt to turn it on as you can cause more damage than what is already there.

Next disconnect the battery from the motherboard as soon as possible to minimize any more damage from occurring before further dis-assembling the laptop to ascertain the extent of the damage.

Be aware that even though the laptop is turned off, the motherboard is still essentially “live” in various places until you disconnect the battery from the motherboard. The Power On/Off button is not a power isolating switch, so disconnect the battery as soon as you have access to it, to prevent any electrical problems if you slip while using any tools on the open laptop. Physical damage while using tools is another matter ;-)

Here’s a link that describes what to do in the event of water coming into contact with electronics. Electronics Water Damage

Here’s a link to the service manual for the laptop taken from this webpage.

It describes the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to dis-assemble the laptop to access the various components, (scroll to p.81 to view the keyboard removal procedure). Depending on the amount of visible damage or even liquid still remaining will determine how far to dis-assemble it.

Usually with liquid damaged keyboards when attempting to repair them you can cause more problems than what you had before you started and it is better to simply replace the keyboard.

Search for Dell Inspiron 15 7579 keyboard to get results for suppliers.

Hopefully this is of some help to get you started. Good luck with the repair.

Also when taking the laptop apart is there a method to ground the motherboard to prevent myself short circuiting something? I already have an anti static wrist strap and a power supply I can use to ground myself too in case. I’m very concerned about the data on the laptop. Could I try removing the SSD to keep the data safe?

Hi,

Removal of the SSD would safeguard your data. The manual should show how to do this. Store it safely away from any potential hazards

Wearing an earthed wrist strap should be sufficient to prevent ESD from you to the motherboard. The manual describes how to discharge the motherboard when removing the battery, effectively neutralizing it.

Once the battery has been disconnected and you are wearing the wrist strap there is more likelihood of problems being caused by using tools and accidentally damaging components by slipping when using the tools rather than through ESD

Just remember to take your time and if unsure how to remove/unplug anything do not force it, think it through and you'll be OK

Also if cleaning is necessary with Isopropyl Alcohol and a soft brush be gentle. You don't want to accidentally remove any components from the board by being over vigorous.

Good luck with the repair. ;-)

Thank you for the advice I have inspected and cleaned my laptop and I'm making multiple backups as I'm typing. I would like to also ask if I could use alcohol to remove the sugary substance remaining in the keyboard or would purchasing a new keyboard be necessary. Only the right side portion (the enter {}"+ insert and delete keys feel soft but confirmed to be functional.

Hi,

Using Isopropyl Alcohol to remove contaminants is fine. Just remember to do this either with the battery disconnected from the motherboard or the keyboard disconnected from the motherboard (in which case the battery should be disconnected anyway). Allow time for the alcohol to dry (or evaporate) and then see how it goes.

You may find that everything is OK with the keyboard but in the near future you may start to experience some problems with it as you may have missed some spots (or couldn't access them). Hopefully not.

Cheers.
