try cleaning the headphone jack, and inserting headphones a few times.. it may have a build up of dirt etc.tricking the phone into headphone mode. if that doesn't sort the problem and the symbol for mute doesn't appear then you may have a faulty headphone flex.

Tried inserting headphone jack many time with no luck ....the mute and sound symbol do appear, but no sound????
then you need to look at the cable no. 3 for earpiece/proximity. try reseating the cable or if that doesn't work then you need a new flex. it's simple to replace yourself..it simply clips on and off
OK, I'll take a look at cable 3 connection, but does this cable control the vibrator and speaker sound also, because headphone sound works great with everything else, ringer test, ipod, games...etc)
ear piece is in the cable no3. and vibrator is different. have you opened the log board , if you opened then again opened it and check the pins of vibrator. if the pins are down then pull up slowly . then reseat the logic board . and properly reseat the cable 3 on the logic board ..
speaker (as in loudspeaker) is on the dock connector. vibrate is controlled by the same cable as headphone. if the motor/vibrate is at fault and not the flex then you can replace just the vibration motor. it may be that the motherboard isn't making contact with the prongs of the motor (the screws near the don't remove sticker) check the prongs or replace. if that doesn't work then it's the headphone jack causing these problems...

when you flick the vibrate switch does the icon appear? if it does then it may be the motor at fault.
