Rear axle assembly housing

I have a 42" craaftman riding mower and the shaft that goes into the top of the rear axle housing has a lot of slop in it causing a lot of grinding noise when put in gear.Can the shaft be fixed in the housing or do you have to replace the whole i guess its called trans axle housing.

Are you referring to the shaft that connects your gear selector? Any pictures would be great. Also, could you post the serial and model number, it would help us to get more information about your mower. Have you checked on http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdir... to see if that looks familiar? Thanks.
