iPod classic Works perfectly with external power but not with battery

I have a 7th generation iPod Classic with 160GB (A1238 model). It works perfectly well when connected to external power. At that time, the battery is shown as fully charged also. However, if I disconnect it from external power, it does not even come up. Have tried Reboot (Select+Menu) etc but in vain. I have tried to drain the battery but as soon as I remove the external power, the display and the iPod shutdown immediately. Hence battery is never drained.

Any idea what could be wrong?

Do you have a Mac or PC? To determine diagnostic tools.

I have access to both. Where are the better tools available? BTW, tried connecting to my PC. Does not turn on but the screen flickers a little. The Select+Menu option still does not reboot the iPod.

On your Mac, download, install and run Coconut Battery. Go to the iOS feature and see if it will give us a comprehensive report on that battery.

It is not helping as my iPod does not turn on when connected to any Mac or Windows machine. The display flickers a bit but very dimly. If I connect it to external power source (wall plug), it turns on fine and works too. I suspect I need to change the battery for sure.

I have replaced the battery now however the problem remains. I searched on the web and some folks are suggesting it could be a Logic board problem. In India, it is difficult to even get someone to look at these Classic ('Heritage' or 'Dino'?) iPods, let alone getting correct parts. Looks like I will junk this one. Unfortunate, as it was a gift from my wife!! Thanks for your help though!
