Headphones mode on and off randomly on iPhone3G

Hi,

In the beginning the "headphones mode" turn itself on or off once or twice a day. I used to "fix" this problem by plugging in and out the headphones once or twice and suddenly it worked normally.

When in "headphones mode" I can only talk with the loudspeaker on.

It became worse until this started to happen dozens of times a day and I could no longer "fix" it by plugging in and out the headphones - I could only talk with the loudspeaker on. Since the screen turns on for a few seconds when this transitions happen, once it drained the battery by night.

I bought the headphone jack part from iFixit and changed it with success. When I turned on the phone the result was the same as ever, no problem solved.

I searched ifixit and googled for an answer. Many people have the same problem but no answers that work for me. Anyone solved this?

I seem to recall that this was heat related and happened mostly after the 3.XX upgrade. Just out of curiosity, may be you could do something like a restore to older firmware and see if that makes a difference. I know that some users place the phone in the freezer to eliminate this error from happening, however, I do not think that it is a good idea. It could cause condensation and could lead to corrosion. check on here for different firmware. That site also tells you how to do it, just in case you are not familiar with it. Good Luck and let us know what happens.

Thanks for your answer.

Unfortunately downgrading is not an option for me since I need the version I'm using for some apps. I'm using 3.1.3 and I'll try an upgrade to 4.x though the chances are slim.

Sounds like a good plan, let us know how it is going.
