Why is the pop-up flash stuck up?

The pop up flash of the Nikon D 5200 is stuck up and would not open even on pressing various buttons or changing various settings. An external flash when mounted on the flash shoe works well though

Not totally sure what's causing that, but I’ve heard it can sometimes be a mechanical issue with the pop-up flash spring or latch. Since your external flash works fine, at least you’ve got a solid backup. Still, if you rely on the pop-up, it might be worth getting it checked out by a camera technician — just to be safe.
