How can I get panned audio to work again?

I replaced my battery the other day in my iPod, and when I fired it up it appeared to work just great. I went for a drive with it and listened to a handful of songs without any problem.

Then, the song "Innervision" by System of a Down came on. The song starts up and before the band breaks into the main verse, a single guitar plays, panned to one side of the speakers. I literally could not hear this audio.

I tried a couple of other songs that have this effect occur, and they did the same thing. If the audio is playing in both speakers simultaneously, it sounds just fine. But when it pans to one side (I'm not sure which it's supposed to be) it completely cuts out.

How can I fix this? Is there a way to fix it without buying something?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Try disabling "Sound Check" under the settings menu, it can cause effects like that, also try turning "Equalizer" off under the ipod's settings menu as well.

Thanks, but Sound Check is already off...

Plus now I am noticing that it will cut in and out too if the cable is wiggled around, so...I have a sinking feeling that means that if I want it to work properly again, would have to buy a new jack.

That being said, I am also wondering, if I were to play it in my car via USB instead of via audio jack, would that solve this problem? Two totally different methods of transfer, so...I would imagine I wouldn't have to worry about it, would that be correct?

yes, i plug my iPod into my car all the time through the dock connector, the audio jack transmits volume, as well as analog audio, while the dock connector only transmits data, and the stereo amplify's it, so if the audio from the dock connector is bad, then the iPod most likely is as well. iFixit sells the whole headphone jack/lock switch cable for $25 and this part is prone to be damaged when the battery it removed/replaced, that happened to my ipod video once, except the hold swich was bad
