Increased EMF after damage?

My iPhone 6 has a few areas of damage: the screen very slightly lifts up/clicks at the bottom, the metal on the bottom outside is kind of beaten up, and at one point water got under the screen. Phone functions perfectly. But wondering, does this damage mean the phone is emitting greater EMF than is standard? Used this phone during pregnancy.

To add to @ajcooke01 answer: The only method to protect your self from EMI would be to live is a Faraday Cage with no electronics! Clearly, thats just not possible.

While the image shows a high voltage spark, all radio & microwave signals would be blocked as well. So then that gets into the ability of the phone to gain access to these signals or send them if you were inside the Faraday cage (full cage).

So now lets look at your phone internals you’ll see detail shields around some areas. Here the Orange chip is the modem which would be the most radio emissive part of your phones internals.

In your case the lifted edge wouldn’t really alter the emissions that much. If you have such a concern I would get the phone properly fixed.

After you deliver your baby the risk to your baby being closer to your phone would be more of an issue. So make sure you place your mobile phone away (or fully off) from your baby even if you don’t fix it.

thank you for taking the time to help me. so does this mean that when properly installed, the iPhone's screen does block some EMF? (and when not properly installed/kind of loose, greater EMF can escape?) or do you mean more like, the screen is not a Faraday cage, it's not doing much to block EMF?

We can't answer that ;-{

We don't have the needed tools to measure EMI/EMF leakage. Your phone condition would need to be tested and compared to see the difference.

We work on the premise a properly assembled device mets the requirements the manufacture defines for leakage.

Experience tells us the slight gap of the glass along the frame wouldn't be a large leakage potential. Remember glass is transmissive so it does not block EMI/EMF. The metal film within the display has a small amount of blocking the gap on the side would be not be more emissive compared to the screen its self.

Basically we are discussing how many angles are sitting on the hat pin here ;-}

I know you want an absolute value. I think your answer is just fix the display and be done with it.

As I pointed out I don't recommend having your phone (any) around your baby.

Sorry for reviving an old thread. But we are expecting too, and I'm worried a bit home my broken phone can affect the baby. The same issue we have with our home PC set up.

@danj I fear some of the abominations and their risk of a major failure I have built from the parts bin more than EMF, tbh. I have taken 2 S6 Edge+'s and made one, and I even reused parts I wouldn't normally reuse to keep cost down for obvious reasons. Heck, I didn't even tack the back on properly, I let the glass hang on the old adhesive that remained.

That phone's EMF leakage would honestly scare me more than a cracked screen. I have since abandoned it and moved on from it because it kept eating up batteries. Either the clone batteries left all stink, or it had board issues.

@priscalos I personally don't consider a damaged phone to be a radiation hazard. For one thing, any components that radiate EMI are covered by metal shields that won't be affected by a cracked display or bent case; if the damage is sufficient to affect them it will probably damage the motherboard and the phone won't work anyway.

Secondly, any electromagnetic radiation that does leak is going to be insignificant compared to the EMI that the phone generates as part of its normal operation. It's typically putting out multiple kinds of radio waves for the cellular connection, bluetooth and wifi. Some cell phone signals can reach as far as 45 miles away, so there's no comparison between the tiny amount of leakage you're talking about and a radio signal designed to reach several miles away.

If you look carefully enough, you'll find material to read out there which claims almost anything. To determine the risk of 'increased radiation' from a dropped or damaged iPhone, one would first have to determine what types and levels of radiation the device created in the first place, and thus whether the casing or normal functioning of the device would actually put the user at risk in normal circumstances, let alone if the device was damaged in some way.

It is kinda like a science experiment. :-)

My answer would be that phones give off the same amount of radiation as they are when they are not damaged  versus when they are damaged. It’s more of an urban legend that a damaged iPhone emits more radiation then an iPhone in perfect shape.

Since there remains debate about whether cellphones actually pose a genuine health risk at all, all one could reasonably say is that you are not likely to be at any additional risk unless you also note a degraded performance from the iPhone.

Sorry guys! I have an iPhone 12 pro max. The glass back has cracked on it but it’s not like it shattered the entire back. Ever since then I noticed my fingertips getting hot and tingly. And this has been reduced since I bought some gloves that shield against EMF. My only guess would be that it’s coming from the 5G somehow. When I switch to LTE, I can feel it but not as much.

@alexgarcia89449 - Alex EMF isn’t blocked by glass, so that’s not what you are feeling. Phones don’t use high enough power that you would feel it or any other emissive force.

Think of it this way… You can touch a fresh 9 Volt battery with you fingers dry or even wet! Now a weak 9 Volt battery still has enough power that touching the contacts to your tongue you can feel it as your tongue nerve endings are exposed and wet!

Now let’s look at your phones battery is barely 4 Volts!

@danj well in this case, here’s what we are dealing with… Didn’t happen before, it happens now. It doesn’t happen with any other device, including my iPad Pro. It’s not carpal tunnel syndrome either because I am experimenting seeing it on a desk and nightstand and it still does that not to mention that sometimes if I touch it or get close to it with my fingertips at a certain angle, it’ll be a sharpness to it. Especially around the corners. Maybe it isn’t from the glass but there definitely has to be in a explanation and the ones you provided so far to explain why it doesn’t have enough radiation etc. is not it.

@alexgarcia89449 - I can’t tell you what you are encountering here.

All I can do as someone with a very good understanding of EMI and radio technologies, I can tell you what it’s not. It’s not EMI and it’s not power as nothing is exposed directly as glass is an insulator. Only the metal surfaces could be hot, but as I pointed out the battery voltages are quite low and the radio frequency’s likewise are low! 0.6 Watts for low power and 3 watts for maximum power, WiFI is about 0.3 Watts.

So an undamaged phone just doesn’t have an issue and a cracked cover glass won’t be a risk. But! A more damaged phone twisted up could cause shorts where they normally don’t.

Bottomline time to get you phone fixed!

I can relate to your situation as I have a similar story with my iPhone 14 PRO. After noticing a few dents and scratches, I became worried about the possibility of increased EMF emissions. However, I did some research and found that there is not enough evidence to suggest that damage to a phone will increase EMF radiation. That being said, it's always good to take precautions when it comes to EMF exposure. These hats are pushing it!

The risk is distance so any source that’s a good 10 feet from you won’t be strong enough to cause any issues. And this only protects in the direction of covering which is not above you but to the side and only your brain is protected which doesn’t help a pregnant mother to protect her womb.

Save your money! Just keep your cellphone at a distance and the cell towers.
