USB SATA connection for old hard drive no responding

Hi,

I have been working on this for a few days and after trying a lot of guides, I am at a loss.

I built a new PC and got rid of my old Laptop. I kept the internal hard drive and have been using a SATA USB connection to access my files until I could transfer them over. Until recently it has stopped responding and I can not figure out why, and a lot of the troubleshooting guides online result in the methods/programs etc not responding.

When I plug the usb in, my PC detects the drive, and it will show 2 disks on ‘my computer’, Local Disk D and F. No usage data is available and any option I right click will not respond. When I run diskpart and ask to list disk, it says please wait, On dvcmgmt it shows the usb connection and says all drivers etc are working and up to date. diskmgmt will not respond when the drive is plugged in.

I am not sure if I am missing something obvious, but any help is greatly appreciated. I have tried this on a second PC and get the same results.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Just to add, all the old laptop system files were removed from this hard drive, and the only files that were on it were user documents, pictures, music and downloads"

Hi @matt755 ,

The symptoms you are describing (not responding, worked until a certain point) makes me guess that the drive is actually dying/dead. You may want to try searching for drive data recovery software or tips on how to boot up failing drives (like the old-but-sometimes-works freezer method).
