Swapping the hard drive for an SSD

I have done a straight swap for the original Hard Drive in this imac for an SSD. I’ve fitted the SSD in a housing bracket that is literally a plastic box to hold the drive in place. I’ve tried to format the disk using internet recovery but it keeps jamming showing 24:00 and not advancing. My questions are twofold. Firstly, do I need to also instal a heat sensor cable and secondly, Is there something i’ve done wrong for the internet recovery to be jamming ? IT asks for the wifi password which is being entred correctly but it’s not downloading !

If you have a mid 2011 system you do need the in-line thermal sensor for the system to work correctly.

As far as setting up your new SSD I would have setup a USB thumb drive with the OS installer on it to speed up the process. I’ve seen others have issues with the Internet recovery process when they have a poor WiFi connection or their Internet connection is a bit spotty or slow.

If you are still able to use your HDD can you put it back in and then use a SATA to USB adapter like this one Startech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter to connect the SSD to your system. Sadly, you can’t do the reverse with this adapter as your 3.5” drive needs more power than what this adapter offers. There is a different one for a 3.5” drives.

OK, with your old HD installed go into the Apps Store app and go into Purchased tab to locate your OS release you are currently using and download it again to your HD if you don’t have a copy already. Then launch it to install the OS onto your new SSD at the end you can migrate your user accounts and apps over.
