What should I do? water damage

I lost my nintendo 2ds xl and it sank into water.

I picked it up quickly, turned it off and dried it for seconds with a hair drier (I think its my mistake)

Can I turn it on now?

or what should I do?

Hi @plznoo ,

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the console’s operating design and could damage the components.

First do not turn on your console and then you need to with the console turned off, remove the battery as soon as possible from the console to minimize further damage.''

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the console and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from most pharmacies), to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is <70% IPA, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

You may have to replace the battery as it is very hard to recover a battery from water damage.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the boards.

Hopefully after you have done all this the console might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit teardown guide for your console, which may be of some help.

Nintendo 2DS XL Teardown

If this process seems too daunting, take your console to a reputable, professional electronics repair service, experienced in water damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Hi @aaaaaaaaaaeea,

You can only try.

By now the battery would be depleted beyond recovery and would need to be replaced and as for the rest all you can do is open it up and check what damage has occurred in the way of corrosion etc.

Follow the suggestions in the Chosen Solution above and when satisfied that it is a clean as possible and no obvious damage etc, insert a new compatible battery and see if it charges. If it does then allow it to fully charge before trying to turn the console and check what happens.

I have no experience with this stuff, if I bring it to a mechanic or whatever they're called is it possible to work?

by

@aaaaaaaaaaeea

If they're honest and after inspecting it, they might say it's beyond repair because of how long it has been in this condition and that it would cost more than what it is worth to try or try to fix it with no guarantees that it will work and still charge you for trying to fix it.

Others might say it can't be fixed once you tell them what's happened without even looking inside it.

According to my experience, I dropped my mobile into water twice, fall down from my pocket, do not put your phone in coat pocket. then i pick it up as soon as possible, take off the case and take out the battery soon. Thrown the water out with force then dried it with cool wind, this is very important!

A gentle cleaning of the boards with alcohol may revive it. But I've done many of these and often it requires replacement motherboard and usually new battery as well

It may count based on what type of water it was. It may also have not been water, and could have been something even worse. Unfortunately, I think you may have to see a mechanic and explain to them. They might know the answer.
