iMac does not start; boot chimes in a loop

I have a imac that does not boot; the startup chime comes up every 2 or 3 seconds and the display is black. I don’t have the boot disk.

Pls recommend fixes that I can try myself. I unplugged the cable and attached it. there are no other devices connected to it now.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Zap the PRAM; hold down CMD+OPT+P+R while turning on the machine, keep it held down until you hear the third startup chime, then release and see if it boots.

Hold down the OPTION key at startup and see if the boot volume selector comes up. If it does, you may have a hard drive or OS problem.

Thanks. I don't have an apple keyboard . I use a PC wireless USB keyboard. What would be the equivalent keys? thanks again for taking time to reply.

You’ll need a USB wired keyboard & mouse with this older system until you get it working. Do you have the grey CD or DVD that came with the system?
