MacBook keeps crashing after tried almost everything...

Hey experts randomly browsing ifixit threads…!

I have really uncommon problem with my 15” Late 2013 Macbook pro - Intel Iris Pro gpu; 8gb ram; i7 haswell - i think that it’s the mid 15” model from that year, identifier is Macbook (pro) 12,1…

The thing is, that my macbook suddenly crashes, sometimes more, sometimes less… sometimes it just goes black and sometimes screen blacks out, backlight is on and fans starts spinning ALTHOUGH MY MACBOOK ISN’T HOT!! (I’ve even tried to touch heatpipes and cpu cooler directly while this occurs and it has like 50 dgr, nothing serious… we will get to this later)

Okay, now, let me tell you, what I’ve tried and why I am 100% sure that the problem isn’t in RAM, CPU, GPU and SSD (also battery occasionaly, but we will get to this too…) I can prove this and I’ll prove it, just keep reading…

Now for the real :

  • First things first I’ve tried to reset SMC / NVPRAM / PRAM, of course it didn’t help..
  • Next I tried to reinstall osx by internal recovery, but it crashed while installing new system so…
  • I’ve tried internet recovery and installed Mavericks on my laptop… after few minutes browsing in Mavericks, laptop crashed again (I haven’t even signed into icloud so i can see if the problem isn’t in something like icloud virus hehe)
  • So I’ve figured out to update it on latest os HS and even tried beta of Mojave, still no luck…
  • I was on the ground, so I sent my laptop to authorized service (we don’t have apple store in Czech Republic) for diagnosis (20$) and these -excuse this word - idi*** told me that cpu / gpu (it’s macbook with only internal gpu, not dedicated one) has old paste and they’ve re-pasted, so I paid another 70$… i opened my macbook in car, started it and crash occured after few minutes again… so I went back and got my money back - of course..
  • After all this I have nothing to lose, so I opened by myself (I am kind of engineer) and saw that 2 lid screws were loose, another screw on cooler was loose as well and one on motherboard was loose as well… i still can’t figure out how such people can work in 3rd party laptop / phone service, specialized for apple… nevermind
  • First of all I’ve tried to disconnect battery and run macbook just off the adapter, it wasn’t crashing for about few hours, so I thought it was 5 years old battery… running macbook only from adapter, I’ve tried to stress it with cinebench and geekbench constantly watching temperatures with MacFan…. the weird thing is that cpu cores haven’t reached more 50-60 degrees and fans weren’t spinning at all… IS IT POSSIBLE that my adapter is broken? Or it’s just normal thing because adapter isn’t powerfull enough to run macbook on max speed…?
  • Next I bought brand new battery for my macbook, original one with 0 cycles, replaced it and macbook was crashing again… so I tried to calibrate it (charge at max, wait next 2 hours, discharge it, wait 5 hours after macbooks turns off so battery drains off completely and charge it again… done this twice, unfortunately haven’t helped at all…
  • Tried all this I was thinking is my cpu / gpu cooler and heatpipes aren’t faulty, so i stressed my macbook SOOO MANY TIMES while touching ends of heatpipes, running fans on max manually, touching cooler directly on cpu and integrated gpu and heatpipes are 100% okay. After temperature in cpu core raises from like 50 to 90dgrs, i can immidiately feel it on both ends of heatpipes and while stressing both cpu and gpu temperature in all cpu covers don’t go above 90 dgrs… that’s okay I think, heatpipes feels like okay..
  • I also checked if there isn’t any hole where could liquid coolant de-vaporate from heatpipes and there are no holes… and heatpipes transform heat so fast with almost no delay so I am calm to say that they are 100% okay, I think I’d see it if they were bad…!
  • Small note, thermalpaste from service was bad, so I repasted it again with cooler-master branded thermal paste.. results in benchmark were even better…
  • Next thing that adds on fact that both gpu and cpu are okay is that after re-pasting I get even better bench results, on stockpaste I was getting about 29.5fps in OpenGL test, now I get even 32.2fps.. same with cpu render test, 458cb stock paste, 540cb coolermaster paste…! If gpu / cpu were faulty, macbook would crash immiadiately - at least these are my thoughts….
  • I also tried to reinstall os on new usb HDD, still kept crashing…
  • I also tried things like opening as many apps as possible to see if RAMs aren’t bad, no results, macbook was still running…
  • In the end, my macbook still keeps crashing randomly.. in safe boot, in normal mode, in recovery, sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes after 7 hours, sometimes under heavy load and sometimes on desktop… it’s so weird!!

Note : while doing these are things, I’ve tried to reset SMC, NVRAM and PRAM like million times…

My final conclusion…? :

  • My macbook adapter is bad?
  • SMC controller is broken

Can someone confirm it..? Or maybe I am completely wrong..?

All that being said, I’d appreciate any help.. really any help, what to try, what may be faulty and how can I fix it… because I am person who understants electricity and things related to it a lot, I think that I could fix most of the problems by myself, just need to find where the problem is…

Perhaps I’ll try to check my adapter voltage & current with multimeter to see if it’s really working properly…

Thanks for paying attention!!!!

As I said, I am open for any help, I’d highly appreciate it…

All the best,

Marián Trpkoš.

PS : Excuse my english, it isn’t my native language and I am typing this from phone because my macbook is well - broken.. haha..

EDIT :

Tried apple diagnosis several times as well, no results, everything was okay…

Update (08/03/2018)

Oh gosh, guess I found it??

Says Thread 1 error, is it CPU thread? Or what?

Crash Report

http://www.mediafire.com/file/papem6sa9k...

Check It please!

Thanks man!

I am not sure if it's system crash error, but it's like everywhere in console, almost in every folder so I guess so...

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

To check your power adapter you might want to review this Apple T/N Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters focusing on the cord and the connector ends. Do they look good or do they need replacing?

You might what to run this app: CoconutBattery it will allow you to see the batteries health. Post a snapshot of the main windows and paste it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

What do you use your system mostly for?

by

Thanks for fast reply!

Also I forgot so to say that I’ve tried apple diagnosis... no results...

My adapter definitelly looks like it should be replaced, but every it should be okay, it’s old, wire tube is bit old and powerd cord is also bit bad, but it works fine.... at least it seems like, but it’s one of the possibilities..!

Coconut battery is app that tells nothing tbh, I bought something called BATTERY MONITOR, it of course shows cycles and such things, but it mainly shows voltage on battery of it’s own and mostly on every cell! It also can show graphs and such a things...

I’ll send screen later after I get home, old battery was really old like 500-600 cycles, but new one is brand new, showing 101% of original capacity, 2 cycles made by me... the battery is 100% fine...!

The 12,1 is this machine:

Apple MacBook Pro "Core i5" 2.7 13" Early 2015 Specs

Identifiers: Retina Early 2015 13" - MF839LL/A* - MacBookPro12,1 - A1502 - 2835

Oh, sorry @mayer ....

Probably my fault.. but it’s 15” 2013 late model mid tier 8gb ram, i7 haswell, iris pro 2gb... probably found bad model identifier.. I’ll check it at home

@majda107 - This is not a good system for what you are doing! You need a 15" model and likely need something with 16 GB of RAM and a better GPU.

Frankly, you'er expecting more from this system than what it can offer. Which has likely fatigued the logic board (CPU module) beyond what it can handle.

OK, lets forget the cause and just look at what you'll need to do to fix your system. It requires a new logic board.

@danj

Does that really matter? The macbook could handle it, I see no problem.. how I said before, cpu, gpu, ram and ssd disk is 100% okay... why do you even point on this..?

Seems pointless for me..

Then this is your system: MacBook Pro 15" 2.6 GHz i7" (Late 2013) Intergraded Graphics

I think you missed the point the IG models don't have the power to support heavy work loads and only having 8 GB is just to little for any 4K video editing. Review the systems specs and look at the DG model of the same year.

The size of your screw driver needs to match up with the fastener! Using the incorrect tool will either break the tool or damage the bolt you are trying to undo. This same logic holds true with computers.

Photoshop, Fusion 360, 4K FinalCut Pro X are all heavy duty apps!

I use a 2013 Mac Pro for my Photoshop & Fusion 360 editing and trust me I'm a novice! It can get warm with what I'm doing with this powerful beast!

So I'm sure you'er pushing this system beyond what it was intended to run.

Sure, a little bit of heavy work won't sink your system, but I think you more than a novice like me.

by

That’s one big lie.....

I know people running fusion 360 on 2012 macbooks and no problems so far...

Also you can edit 4k video on newest Macbook, not pro but only Macbook.. the one macbook without any fans, with really slow specs, yes this macbook.

Highend 2013 model isn’t much faster than one I own...

Period.

Your symptoms are in line of CPU shutdown problem (a fatigued logic board).

I said a little bit of heavy stuff is doable its when you push the limits running this system for hours which most serious video people would be doing this system would have its issues.

Also keep in mind I was pointing to the limits of your RAM & GPU which is part of the Intel CPU in your system.

I'm sure others which have a similar system have the dual graphics model MacBook Pro 15" 2.6 GHz i7 (Late 2013) Dual Graphics and have more RAM than 8 GB, ask them! If you had this model you have a much better system for what you want to do!

by

How can it be CPU related problem if I can run cinebench cpu test without any issues and I even get better score after re-pasting by my own? I don’t think you are right there.... if CPU was dead, it would crash anytime I’d put heavy load on cpu and that’s not the case..

For the real, I think it’s pointing on SMC failure - sudden crash, backlight issues, fan issues... everything is pointing on it, but reseting it haven’t helped at all...

Also I know that macbook with dedicated gpu would be obviously better... 16gb isn’t that necessary... I’d buy it but it’s hella expensive...

I had this problem and by examining the system logs the crash seems to happen on a remote procedure call. Perhaps related to one of the iCloud services. I don’t use iCloud so I switched off all synchronisation (photos, email, etc). I haven’t experienced the crash since

While you can encounter a crash within iCloud, this is not the case here. Take a look as the crash report in the OP's question you'll see its a local file system error. This often happens when the system runs out of RAM and/or storage.
