i personally recommend arctic silver 5 as it is metallic and is an enhanced cooling compound. But you can only use it if the heat sink is copperbased on both contact areas and try not to get any compound on the aluminium.

if it is not copper on both the chip and heatsink then i recommend the arctic mx2.

You’ll need a feeler gage or some card stock stacked up to figure out the distance. Dry fit the heat sink and slide the gage finger or some strips of card stock and then measure them. You want the clamping to be snug not squished!

Here’s the info on the pads:

so no one knows what thickness i need, so i need to open, check, and buy, then open it again and replace them.

The pads are cheap! ($15 for the three sheets). Just buy all three so you have it on hand.

I've never heard of replacing thermal pads. Why are you wanting to replace pads? Can you verify that they have failed in some way?

If you want to replace the existing pads, then use the same thickness that is on the component as you want good contact between the component and the heat sink / heat pipe.

"You should replace thermal pads with new thermal pads or with a thermal paste that is specially designed to replace thermal pads. Do not reuse old pads and do not replace pads with normal thermal paste like Arctic Silver"

by

You never specified why you want to replace pads and what components these pads are used on. You also do not reference any authoritative source for your information. Are your components overheating? You need to clarify your question.

by

Thermal pads are often used on the VRAM chips as the height of the chips are lower than the heatsink the GPU uses, which is likely the case here.

CPU/GPU Thermal paste is not designed to gap large spans

i have overheating, that just started recently, both cpu and gpu
