My laptop froze after receiving a Microsoft warning and to call a specific number to save my passwords.

Most likely a scam. Google the phone number see who it goes to.

Sadly your system is no longer getting OS upgrades so security issues like this put you at risk when you are surfing the web. Best to disconnect from the world with this system and get a newer one if you need to connect to the internet.
Do get a good anti virus and malware app installed just the same.
