What is the best processor to upgrade a low-end iMac mid-2010 21.5"?

I have a low-end 21.5" iMac (Mid 2010) that came with an i3 3.06 GHZ processor and a 4GB of RAM. After long years of work, my iMac started getting pretty much slow. Last year, I added an extra 8GB of RAM because most of the time my RAM was pretty much used.

I noticed a fair boost with 12GB of RAM, but I'm not happy at all with its current performance so I decided to upgrade my processor, but I want to know:

What is the best processor I can put in my machine?

I was hoping for an i7, but I'm not sure if it'll be suitable.

Thanks a lot for your reply, mayer. I just found out in the answer below that someone was able to upgrade it to the quad i7 870S processor and it worked fine because it fits the TDP and power of my iMac, but sadly Intel stopped selling this model: Upgrading CPU from i3 3.06 Ghz to i5/i7-S version 82W

I was hoping for a similar current i7 model that would fit my machine.

Actually, there is i7 that will work. It is a 2.93 GHz model with the same socket type. There are plenty of YouTube videos with tutorials about it, and you can find one used on eBay guaranteed to be working for around $40
