Can I safely physically break the led light in my Moto G phone?

I have what seems to be a common problem with the Moto G - the led light behind the speaker has come on and will not switch off even when the phone is off.

Noone online seems to have found anyway to turn it off - it appears to be a warning about the battery not taking charged and could perhaps have something to do with moisture getting in through the hole for the speaker at the ear.

It's quite annoying, so my question is can I open the device and maybe physically break or disconnect the led or that a terrible idea?
