Could it be possible that overfilling caused for a safety switch to engage? I know on certain cars there are safety switches to prevent low refrigerant levels engaging the compressor thus preventing compressor damage, possibly there is one for when it is too high.

Manual called for 2.87 lbs. Only took 12 ozs. If it cut off because it was over filled, how do you release some? Thanks for your answer-sounds logical

In order to release some, you would have to take it to a shop. You cannot just release R134 into the environment. Shops have equipment to capture the R134 and recycle it.

I believe they sell a gauge you can use to check the level, if it is overfilled you may have to do what skippy suggested since R134 is bad for the environment, and it needs to be contained.

"R-134A is subject to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Clean Air Act Regulations at 40 CFR Part 82.

WARNING: DO NOT vent to the atmosphere. To comply with provisions of the U.S. Clean Air Act, any residual must be recovered. Contains 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a), a greenhouse gas which may contribute to global warming," and more on page 11970 http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2004-03-... so you are still dealing with a greenhouse gas. Ifixit is in existence to repair/recycle/ and maintain electronic devices to keep them out of landfills etc. Stands to reason that we as the users of this board should refrain from causing environmental damage. Just my two cents..so I am with skippy722 on this one.

I am in agreement with you oldturkey and skippy, perhaps not for all the same reasons. I was not implying that they should release it into the atmosphere, it is against the law release it like that and bad for the Ozone. I do think that more environmentally minded people should be educated that it is used as a propellant for a number of things including canned air.
