Dishwasher has no power to drain pump.

Hi all,

Having an issue with my Kenmore dishwasher from 2015. Model is 66513409N412.

The Dishwasher will not drain. There is no power to the drain pump during the drain cycle.

Things I have already done:

1. Checked for a blockage.

2. Replaced the drain line.

3. Replaced the drain pump.

4. Checked floater switch ( just for contact, I don't know if the sensor is broken)

And it still won't drain. The pump doesn't even make any noise when drain cycle starts. I'm about to go hook a multimeter up to the drain pump wire harness to see if it's getting any power, I'm guessing it isn't.

Any suggestions? This model doesn't have a flap to open and close in the main pump, everything else seems to be working fine on it.

Come back after you have used your multimeter

I have the same problem. Any resolution yet? I have checked the power to the drain pump during the drain cycle but there is no power to the pump. Everything else checks out. I am wondering if it is the controller.

I too have the same problem with my Neff 7405 dishwasher - no power to the drain pump.

I have renewed the drain pump and tested, (by applying mains power to it), that it works. However, the drain pum does not turn on during the wash cycle.

Does anybody out there have any ideas as to what this could be?

Cause 1

Drain Pump

The drain pump uses an impeller to force water through the drain hose. If the drain pump motor is not working, the dishwasher won’t drain. To determine if the drain pump is defective, check the pump motor for continuity using a multimeter. If the motor does not have continuity, or if is getting power but won’t run, replace the drain pump. Drain pumps are not repairable—if the drain pump is defective, you must replace it.

Cause 2

Drain Impeller

The drain impeller pushes water through the drain hose and into the garbage disposer or drain line. If the impeller is broken, replace it.

Cause 3

Drain Solenoid Kit

The drain solenoid opens the drain valve to allow the water to exit the dishwasher. If the drain solenoid fails the valve will not open causing the dishwasher not to drain.

Cause 4

Drain Valve

Over time, the drain valve can get clogged with debris. To ensure that water can flow through the drain valve, clean out the valve. If the drain valve is clear of debris but it still won’t actuate, replace it. Drain valves are not repairable—if the drain valve is defective, you must replace it.

Cause 5

Pump and Motor Assembly

The motor drives an impeller to force water out of the drain hose. If the motor runs during the drain cycle, check for a blockage in the drain line. If the motor won't run during the drain cycle or if it just hums when it should be running, the pump and motor assembly might need to be replaced.

Cause 6

Clogged or Improperly Installed Garbage Disposer

If the garbage disposer was installed recently, the drain plug may not have been removed. All garbage disposers are sold with a solid plug in the drain tube. If the dishwasher is not connected to the garbage disposer, the plug must remain in the drain tube. However, if the dishwasher is connected to the garbage disposer, the plug must be removed. If the garbage disposer wasn't replaced recently, it is possible that the disposer is clogged. Remove the dishwasher drain hose from the disposer and clean out both the fitting on the disposer and the end of the drain hose. These are the most common places to find an obstruction if the dishwasher won't drain.

Cause 7

Drain Hose

The drain hose might be clogged. To unclog the drain hose, remove the drain hose from both the dishwasher and the sink drain and clean it out. The drain hose is most commonly clogged near the garbage disposer or dishwasher drain branch tailpiece.

Cause 8

Check Valve

The check valve prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after it has drained. If the valve gets stuck closed, it will prevent the water from draining. If the check valve is stuck closed, try cleaning it out and then replace it if necessary.

Cause 9

Check Ball

The check ball is a small plastic ball in the check valve that prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after the dishwasher has drained. If the check ball gets stuck, it will prevent water from draining through the check valve. If the check ball is stuck, try to free it.

Cause 10

Water Pump Belt

The water pump belt might be worn out or broken. However, because very few dishwashers have a water pump belt, you should search for your model number to determine if it has a water pump belt. To access the water pump belt, remove the lower panel. The water pump belt is located on the bottom of the motor. If the water pump belt is broken or worn, replace it.

Answer misses the point. Basic solutions were already checked. Question is what to do if no power to pump.

It could be your main control board. Not the buttons on the door but the circuit board under the tub.

Short answers: Bang/tap the drain motor when it is supposed to drain. If it frees up, the bearings are shot. Replace the motor.

There is also a diagnostic mode om Whirlpool-built dishwashers I think you just hit three different cycle buttons in the same sequence 3 times quickly and (start button next?) all the lights come on. The clean light flashes codes before doing a bunch of short tests. Lookup the codes. There should be schematics sheet folded up under/behind the kickplate or door.

I DON'T KNOW THE SPECS OF YOUR MODEL, BUT HERE'S WHAT I KNOW

Make sure to fact-check my advice, I'm just speaking from the perspective of trying to get my Whirlpool/KitchenAid dishwasher to rinse all the detergent away. The one thing I have not replaced is the drain motor. It does seem louder than it used to be, so maybe I should soon, but I learned a lot from thinking the issue was the drain motor. It was an arduous and frustrating battle so you might want to read this just to avoid all the misleading advice. The drain hose on mine came with a check valve and I replaced it. Finding this out was nearly impossible, and asking for one at a hardware store will give you sideways looks. The only one from Whirlpool's website is much shorter than what came with my dishwasher. Instructions say not to extend the hose with another, so I'm guessing they just want it to got to an air gap. This makes some sense, as you would not a siphon effect if you have an anti-drain-back check valve. Anyways, my problem was that the dishes had detergent reside on them, even though it would get them clean. Yours must be full of water.

SKIP TO HERE: THE PUMP IS NOT WORKING

If you want to test the drain pump, Use a multimeter. Obviously, the drain hose routes towards the drain. (After an inverted p-trap loop or air gap somewhere) disconnect the motor wire and test for resistance (ohms) and see if you get any change. Then switch the meter to volts (not sure if it's AC or DC) and connect the test leads to the wires. Start the drain cycle to see what voltage is being supplied for the motor. Not sure where to find specs, but the voltage is likely AC. You basically just want to know if adequate power is getting to the motor.

I'm having the same issue on my Maytag dishwasher, I replaced the drain pump as it filled with water once before causing the tub not to drain, I pulled the pump apart ( super simple 120vac pump, basically a coil and a magnetic shaft with rubber water seal, that obviously failed) used rtv on the seal and it ran fine for another year. So I assumed that the pump seal went bad again, this time just bought another pump for $22. Of course this time the new pump didn't run either, I measured the voltage going to the pump and only got 16vac from the control board. I pulled the control board apart and the relay on the board is pulling in when you activate the drain cycle, but it isn't sending 120vac to the pump. I can't find the schematic for the board, so Fixing it will be tough, I'm now searching for a new control board, probably should just buy a new dishwasher but it's passing me off now. We'll see if a new board fixes the issue.
