Having trouble replacing a key

The "G" key is unresponsive so I bought a replacement key. As part of the replacement kit, I also get a hinge and a cup.

One thing I noticed is that when the "G" key is removed, I can get a response if I push down hard enough on the cup.

Given that I'd like to reset the cup, but it looks like it's being held down with a strip of sone kind. I've never seen that before. Is it ok to cut that strip?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Could you upload an image of what the “strip” looks like? Also, upload an image of the keyboard without the key so we can examine the connectors on the keyboard itself for damage.
