Why is my battery not charging?

I ordered a battery several weeks ago and everything had been working fine. But last night, I left my mac charging and this morning woke up to see that the battery had not been charged. It is still at 86%, where it was last night. When I click on the battery icon, it says that, "Battery is not charging". The power source is the power adapter.

The battery has 5 cycles on it and the condition is Normal.

This is the second issue within the month that I've had with this battery. Very frustrating.

How can I resolve this issue? Is this a defect of the battery?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I think that it more than likely is the battery itself, I am assuming you've tried an SMC reset already. Are you using a genuine charger? A lot of the "replacement" chargers are known to cause these sort of issues..

Download this great little app! CoconutBattery see what it tells you and post a screen snapshot of the main window for us to see. Adding images to an existing question maybe there is something deeper going on here. Post one image with the charger connected and one without.

The strangest thing just happened - when I took out the charger from my mac, it completely shut off immediately. And it didn't turn back on unless it was hooked to a charger. I think the battery is defective. I'm going to return it. Thanks again for all the help.

So I just took the new battery out and put my old battery (with over 1000 cycles) back into my mac air. Voila - the mac no longer shuts off when the charger is taken out. All the issues are resolved - except, of course, the high battery cycle. I'm going to return this battery and then just go to an apple store and have it replaced there. At least I gave it a shot. Thanks again for all the input.

Hello xcelr8t,

The most likely issue is a defective battery, or a non-properly connected flex cable. When you are installing the battery flex cable, you don't want to push on the center then the sides because it will not connect properly. You want to attach it via from the left to right or in vise versa. If you still have the issue after trying to repair it again, then the issue is most likely a defective battery. I would recommend, if that is the issue, sending it back to seller for a refund, then purchasing a higher quality one from a seller like iFixit or Fixez, or exchanging it for a new one.

Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for your input.

I kept having the issue so I just returned the battery. I actually bought it from iFixit, so maybe I got unlucky. I'm thinking of either going to an apple store and having it fixed there, or giving iFixit another chance. I hope it won't happen again if I choose to try iFixit again.
