My Mac starts up chimes and I get the progress bar. Then shuts down.

My iMac starts up, I get the chime, and then the progress bar. After the progress bar goes half way the computer shuts down. How can I get it working?

Alternatively I just got a new iMac and would minimum like to access the hard drive on the old one to get files. I know about target mode. IF the old one doesn't start up can I connect the two? If nothing works I'll take the hard drive out and connect to the new one.

Thanks

You'll need a universal adapter or external 3.5" USB enclosure if you pull the drive to access it.

Universal Drive Adapter

Sounds like you may have done a system update that did not install properly. If you have the original system installation DVD, start up from it by holding down the "C" key on start up with the disk inserted. Next run Disk Utilities. You can also try running Disk Utilities in target mode.
