Can I use MacOS DVD player with a USB?

I have MacBook Air and I want to watch movies on it with the DVD player, unfortunately I don't have the money to buy the USB SuperDrive and I don't have a disc drive.

Would it work if I were to plug a USB into my Mac that has movies on it? Or do I HAVE to buy the USB SuperDrive?

Hi Morgan,

You are able to watch movies on a USB flash drive on your Mac, depending on the file type.

DVD's tend to have copy protection so you would need a program to move it over. By the time you bought it and get a few thumb drives a USB DVD player may end up being cheaper.

If @morganm is copying DVDs, then yes that would definitely be true. There's the option of buying a cheaper non-Apple external DVD drive. But if they're just movie files in .mp4 format or similar, then they can be played.

@vehiclefreak409 thanks so much! Once I have the money I'm probably going to invest in one.
