MacBook won't start - Blinking folder with question mark

Hi everyone!

I have a problem with my Macbook Pro from 2012. When I turn it on there's just a blinking folder with a question mark in it, and I can't do anything.

I have tried resetting NVRAM (which worked yesterday!!, but when I tried starting it again this morning, the problem was back and it didn't work resetting it again).

I have also reset the SMC, and I have tried starting it in recovery mode and using the disk utility, which is not possible because the Hard Drive doesn't show up at all. Does this mean it's dead?

When I try to install a new OS X, it says "select the disc where you want to install it" and no disk appears.

I don't mind resetting the entire computer if that's possible, I saved all the important files when I started it yesterday.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

You have a classic case of a bad HD SATA cable and/or dead HDD.

Lets hope its just the cable follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and you'll need this part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable. You do want to apply some electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable rests as often the rough surface of the case abrades the cable shorting it out.

If the file symbol with question mark is blinking and when you go to reinstall there is no drive available, then you have one of two things happening. 1. Your hard drive has died and needs to be replaced. Or 2. The hard drive cable is damaged and will need to be replaced.
