Hard to tell with all the sensors in newer vehicles, and without knowing more about your specific model and the problem............ my jeep needs a new idle control sensor/valve, i may have the exact name wrong. (sensor in the throttle body) So it will not idle even in gear, I cleaned the sensor and the throttle body and it works "ok" for now until i can get the new sensor. Anyway it could have been a few things and I would not have known the exact problem without taking it in for service and having a skilled mechanic run a diagnostic machine on it.
Hondas at least quite some time ago when i had one, idle high when started cold.
Take it in for service, all repair shops have or should have a computer that will read codes if any, or tell the cars computer to adjust the idle and do other things to help figure out what the problem is. This kind of diagnostic is usually not very expensive, $25 or so and does not take very long......

When you start the car you have to put it in gear right away, then you can put it in park again and it is fine.
