One plus 5 get water damaged and I how can I replace the button

Hi all the forumers,

Firstly i would like to apologize for my stupidity as I was accidentally put my OnePlus 5 inside the washing machine and wash approximately 1 mins before I take it out.

The time I took it out, i noticed the button (all of the button including the screen button) and the camera wash work perfectly. After that I immediately clean it with water (because the phone outside have the soap). Then I shut down the phone, wipe it dry and once again I done a stupid thing which use the air blower to blow the phone. At the end I put inside the uncooked rice more than 30 hours.

Here is the issue that I noticed after 30 hours, ONLY the front facing camera and rear camera totally cannot work(seems like it unable to detect the camera attach on the motherboard) and the fingerprint button a.k.a Home button, as well as the back button and the recent button is unable to touch(nothing happen). The rest such as speaker, port sensor working fine.(I didn't try the charging port yet)

So i decided to replace the camera and the button, so I can find the replacement part for camera, but I cannot find for the replacement part for button. Is that I need to replace the screen together to replace the button?

P.S. Currently I do not have any tools to open my OP 5 so I still put it inside the uncooked rice. Is this OK?

Rice does nothing, You got very lucky that when you powered it back on that it didn't kill the phone. You need to get inside the phone and follow the pattern of damage. I am not familiar with your phone but will go do some research on it and see if the home button is connected to the screen.

Have a watch of this video it will explain a lot.

Hi,

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

Rice is good to eat but does nothing to fix the problems caused by corrosion.

Don't Put Your Device in Rice. Here's Why...

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to with the phone turned off, remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize further damage.''

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from most pharmacies) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is <70% IPA, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

You may have to replace the battery as it is very hard to recover a battery from water damage.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit repair guide for your phone which may be of some help.

OnePlus 5

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in water damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair.

It may be that to have any chance at all of it working again that it needs to be repaired using equipment that the average person doesn't have, but a repair service does e.g. an ultrasonic cleaning machine.

If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Hi,

1. Don't attempt to turn it on at all.

2. Can you give to to somebody to take to a repair service that you have been in contact with? The longer you leave it the worse the problems can become. The corrosion won't stop until it is correctly removed. Even now it may be too late for it to be repaired and working properly again by a "non-professional" repairer. (Not trying to downgrade your repair skills but as I said above, you most probably won't have the specialized equipment necessary, that "may" save the phone.
