Upgrade to Samsung SSD

Hi, Last year I successfully upgraded my MacBook Pro by installing a Samsung 500gb SSD in place of the 500gb hard drive. All works perfect.

Since then I have partitioned the SSD drive with Windows 10:IOS in a 50gb:450 Gb ratio. Again, all works perfect!

Now I would like to replace the SSD with a 2TB version.

My question is, if I make a mirror copy of the 500gb drive on the new 2TB SSD, will I end up with 1.95TB in IOS and 0.05Gb still in Windows or do I somehow need to tell the disk create software that the new space should be in IOS... I’m hoping I don’t need to remove the partition first!

Cheers!

I don't recommend cloning! Most mess up and in the end may appear to work but the hidden partition will be missing.

The best way to do this is to first make a bootable MacOS installer USB drive following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive. I don't recommend High Sierra still. I like what its intended to do but Apple has issues with SATA based SSD's running APFS. So far none of the updates has addressed the queueing issues within Finder. Basically, you'll encounter a process hang as the the queue depth is too big for a SATA based SSD drive unlike a PCIe SSD drive. When you install High Sierra you are forced into APFS and you can't undo it (the updater can convert in-place to APFS but not undo).

Once you have the installer you can take your old drive out and put your new one in. Prep the drive with the OS installer USB and create a brand new user account for now. You'll need a SATA to USB adapter like this one: Startech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter to then hook up your old drive. At the end of the OS installer it will ask you if you have anything to transfer this is when you'll move your user accounts, apps & data over to the Mac partition. For the dual boot Windows you'll need to go through the OS install process for it on the Windows partition. Then using your external drive copy over what you need over.
