MacBook Pro stuck at Login bar

I have two MacBook Pro's, one that I use and one that my partner uses.

Late last week my partners Mac stop booting up, it would allow her to get to the login screen but when she put her password in the bar would only go around 50/60% of the way up and then stop. I hadn't had chance to look into this properly yet, however yesterday I was watch a video on my Mac and it suddenly cut out completely (no power at all). When I turned my Mac back on I'm having the same issues as my partner.

Both of the Macs are exactly the same model and bought within a few days of each other.

So far I have...

- Reset the SMC

- Reset the PRAM

- Reinstalled the operating system

-Used first aid on the HD from disk utility

Anyone have any further suggestions? Its strange both Macs got the same issue days apart.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Kismet!

Do you use the same software and/or access the same web sites that might have given you some Malware?

by

No we have very little software on there. We also don't visit much of the same things, would an OS reinstallation get rid of Malware? Neither Mac will boot in safemode either.

Andy191 - check out below, I think we can jump over the software aspect given you can't gain access to Safe Mode. Don't do any alteration to your OS as you'll likely make things worse!

I would try booting up in safe mode to see if that worked. If it does then you have a software level issue. If not you'll need to look at booting up under an external drive if that worked your issue is the HD SATA cable needs replacing. If not your logic board has a problem.

Here's the IFIXIT guide to replace the cable: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and here's the part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable. I apply a layer of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable rests as the metal case tends to damage the cable.

Do you have a bootable external drive? Thats the next test.

Don't forget to use the 'Option' key when you startup your Mac to gain access to the startup manager so you can select the external drive.

Here's a good reference: Mac startup key combinations

If you can boot up under the external you've nailed the issue down as a bad HD SATA cable. It's also possible the drive is also gone. But until you replace the cable and get a clean backup of anything important we don't want to alter the internal drive yet.
