My friend accidentally separated the top part of my phone screen while the screws were still in place. How much damage has my phone taken roughly? I plan to unscrew, reattach, and rescrew tomorrow.

It sounds like the top glass was separated from the frame; chances are the screen is damaged beyond repair. Your best bet is to replace the screen assembly as they are pretty inexpensive. You can find the repair guide here and the replacement part here.
You could also post a picture so we can see what the damage is.
