White screen of death

Hi all, my 2012 MacBook Pro has stopped working for over 12 months now due to a white screen appearing (no logo etc) In the past I have purchased a new HD cable which seemed to have solved the issue, however after replacing them multiple times, including buying a new HDD, it still only shows a white screen. I have tried all the key combination/ restart options and only the “option/command/p/r“ combo gives a respond by restarting...back to the white screen. Connected old HDD externally to old iMac and repair etc was all greyed out. I can’t even reinstall OS X. Can someone please tell me if there are any options left or is it time to trough it out?

Thanks in advance! Jeff

It sounds like you could have a bad HD SATA cable if you noted replacing the drive improved things. Review this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and here's the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable. A common issue with this cable is abrasion from rubbing along the uppercase where is crosses. I always apply some electricians tape on the uppercase to help protect the cable. You'll need to reformat the drive before using it again.

But that doesn't explain the white screen this will likely need a new logic board. But before we jump there lets do some diagnostics. Can you boot up the system into target disk mode, holding the T when the system is started?

Hi Dan , thanks for taking the time to look into my problem. I have just purchased a new HDD cable, but still the white screen. I am unable to start up in target mode as I have no Firewire/ thunderbolt cable (Assuming this is what is required). I noticed that a new logic board can be quite expensive, if not hard to find. I might have to invest in a Firewire cable first... thanks.

Let me know if you have any other ideas. Cheers!

@jeffnl - You don't really need to connect the system up to test it. Just power up the system and press the T key at that point you should see the FireWire & Thunderbolt symbol floating on the screen. Do you see it?
