Questions on upgrading drives (HDD Vs SSD) and how.
Dan, thank you for alot of great useful information. I plan to update my 2011 iMac with an SSD, primarily for performance (Photoshop, etc). From a performance perspective, is there any benefit of one config over the other?
- Replace existing HDD, adding thermal sensor
- Add SSD behind optical drive as a second drive, migrate to SSD and make this the primary/boot drive
My iMac has had what I suspect is a thermal problem, as the fan is almost always on high speed. I've suspected a FW problem with a sensor, somewhere, and after reading the above threads wonder if this is related to the HDD fan. If I 'add' the SSD, the existing HD and sensor remain, and my fan always at full speed. If I replace HD, and add the inline sensor, I wonder if this problem goes away? Suggestions on diagnosing this fan issue? Thanks.
Is this a good question?

@jvemo - Jon, Both ports in this system are SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) so it makes no difference from a performance perspective which you use. If you swap out your current HD you'll loose the benefit of the all that storage. So I would lean to adding the SSD Vs swapping out.
As to your fan issues lets see if we can resolve that. Is the current drive in the system the original HD or a replacement drive? If it was a replacement drive and its not Apple logo'ed then you'll need to install the OWC thermal sensor cable.
When I first wrote the answer here Seagate had installed the custom firmware on there SSHD's I guess Apple found out and had them pull it ;-{ So discount the part of the answer.
I would recommend getting this great app: TG Pro for less than $20 US its worth it! It should help you isolate out whats happening here.
Once you install the SSD run the OS installer and then use the Migration assistant to move your User accounts & Apps to the SSD. Then restart the system holding the Tab key to gain access to the startup manager select the SSD and then go into Startup prefs to lock it down.

Thanks Dan. I installed TG Pro and my fan issue is coming from the HDD fan. I was wrong about which iMac I have, its a late 2009. Searching for known issues, hasn't surfaced anything just yet.

Forgot to mention, the existing HDD is original.
