More details would help but in a general sense, if the phone is abnormally hot, then there is a subcomponent (i.e. screen, camera or sensor) that is defective and drawing excessive amounts of current. It could also be at the logic board level, where a failed electronic component could be causing excessive current draw.

There are several thermistors on the logic board, used for measuring the temperature at a few critical spots. If the temperature gets too high, the phone will give an error message and shut off.
