I can power on for only so long and it shuts off - getting hot

Can log on line to install OS but never completes due to shut down - white screen

sounds like overheating but I'm going to hand this over to @mayer because I'm pretty sure he's better at diagnosing iMacs than me. Good luck!

@swivalent - Lets see if we can isolate whats going on here. I'm suspecting the GPU card is over heating. To see if thats it you'll need to run a good thermal monitoring app that can log the temps so after the system fails you can review the temps. This app can do that: TG Pro Sadly you'll need to buy the full version to get the logging. But for less than 20 bucks US its worth it!

Once you've got some data past the log file here for us to review as well as a screenshot of the full main screen.

you don't say if it is a laptop or desktop. anyway in the meantime use a very powerful fan or two to aid cooling the computer.

if it works and it is a laptop then buy the strongest cooler you can find.

if it is a desktop and you can manage to open it blow off the dust and possibly replace the PSU
