Why is my Phone not realizing my headphone is in?

So this is an odd one. My headphones work, my phone and tablet's jack works, but my phone and tablet doesn't see it, even though they have for months. I tripped on the cord and fell with just my phone. When this started to happen I tried my headphones on my tablet and it was a no go so I thought it was the headphones but no it works with my laptop my friends iPhone and my other friend's Galaxy s6. So I checked if it was a jack problem but other headphones (without controls and speakers) work and when I use an app to manually let my phone switch it's media options to my headphones it works, good sound, can't skip with the button controls though. It's a bit of a puzzler. Any guesses?

It might be the headphones. Make sure they're pushed in all the way. Also, restart your phone if that doesn't work.

If phone gets put in your pocket you can get dust and pieces of fabric in the headphone jack so when you put headphones in the socket it doesn't make good enough contact etc, the same thing happens on charging ports as well. Find something to try and clean it out but make sure it's not metal.
