software upgrade takes two days and fails to download at the end

When I get a notification for a new software upgrade, i start it and then it takes at least two days to download on wifi (if its not wifi the entire time, it takes longer). and then once it reaches the end, it says that it failed to download. and it keeps happening again and again!
