Why does my phone randomly shut off?

Yesterday, I installed a replacement battery in my iPhone 4S. The charge icon indicates that the battery is 100% charged. I removed the phone from the charger and left it on for 24 hours and it still shows a 100% charge. But, it has randomly shut off 3-4 times. Each time, I have to plug the charger back in before the phone will boot. There are no "low battery" warnings and the screen always shows the battery at 100%.

Hi Greg!

I understand you purchased a new battery from iFixit! Thanks for your order! Sorry to hear you're encountering trouble after your repairs.

If I may ask, what was the reason for your repairs, and was this issue occurring with the previously installed battery? If you're able to reinstall the older battery and not encounter this same issue, then I'd suggest contacting our Customer Support team through this Help page here.

They'll be able to either offer additional troubleshooting steps to see if they can get that battery working correctly, or get a replacement out to you.

Hi,

The original battery was not holding a charge any longer. I was lucky to get 3 hours out of it before I needed to plug in the charger. I assumed that the battery was just worn out. The battery monitor seemed to provide an accurate estimate of battery drain, but every now and then, the monitor would instantly go from around 50% to 0%. So, I bought a new battery. It seemed to work for the first 12-18 hours (I was trying to drain it as per the installation instructions). But the battery monitor never displayed anything but 100%. Unfortunately, I disposed of the old battery before I encountered this problem.

Thanks for your help.

@gmorris this "I have to plug the charger back in before the phone will boot." as well as the battery always showing 100% would lead me to suggest that you start with a new battery. Here is the guide for it iPhone 4S Battery Replacement and a new battery is available right here iPhone 4S Battery

If nothing else it will give you a known-good starting point for further troubleshooting if necessary
