Sounds like your optical drive has failed. Due to the cost of the drive and how seldom it's used, consider getting an external optical drive that can move to your next Mac, maybe a MacBook Air that needs one. Meanwhile you can install a system on your machine in Target Mode. Connect your Mac to another one with a PowerPC processor (don't use an Intel machine). Hold down the "T" key while booting your machine. Its hard drive icon should appear on the screen of the other Mac. You can now run DISK UTILITIES to repair your drive or insert and run a system installation disk. By the way, the second disk of your installation set generally only has applications on it and nothing to do with the system.

I have all my stuff backed up on a Lacie 80gb Hard drive. Was ust going to buy another MAC, but ended up having Dell build a monster of a computer because it accomodates the kids better.I do not have another mac to connect to. Anything else I can do?

Phone a friend? The Dell won't work to do this. Here's a drive that will work on both: http://www.macconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Pr...
